This first leg of my spring trip to the US desert southwest with my friend Bill, takes us along the Cascade Highway in northern Washington state (1-3), through central WA (4-7) then through central Oregon (8) and along the eastern slopes of the impressive Steen Mtns. (9-17). A morning drive out onto the Alvord desert playa (18-19) and then it was into northern Nevada (20-25), onto a backroad just NW of Lovelock, Nevada (26-36)... after getting my starter motor replaced in Winnemucca! Finally, a drive through eastern Nevada (37-41), past some small bubbling hot springs near Mammoth Mtn. (42-43), arriving at the Eureka Dunes in Death valley (44-45). That was one huge scorpion!
