The first shot is beside the highway in northern California and photos 2-11 are from the drive through central California where poppies were blooming everywhere, carpeting the fields with vast patches of orange. Also tried to make the best of the inevitable jet contrails and tie them to my compositions. Photos 12-21 are from the first evening in Anza-Borrego. Photo 19 is of the constellation Orion and the Orion Nebula can be seen near the lower central part of the image. I was up from sunrise the next morning and photos 22-100 are from various areas in and around Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. It was a year with a fabulous wildflower bloom!
This marked my first trip in 17 years where I did not have a true 4x4. In the interests of fuel economy my big V6 Isuzu Trooper 4x4 was swapped for a Subaru Impreza (photo 74 & 91) in late 2009. Naturally it had nowhere near the ground clearance of my old Trooper, however in dirt and soft sand, Subaru's AWD traction proved itself surprisingly capable. For example, I had no issues making it up the sandy trail to Fonts Point (92-99). When I got there, I was the only car in the parking area, with all other vehicles being "real" 4x4s. I had a few people come over and remark that they were amazed I had made it up in the Impreza!
