The first day in this gallery has us hiking around in the sweltering heat and humidity next to the Rio Grande River, which follows the border between Texas and Mexico (photos 1-11) through Big Bend National Park. There were lots of caches of handmade crafts and trinkets (4, 10-11), left there by stealthy Mexicans who cross the river illegally in the hopes of luring some US tourist dollars. That evening a spectacular sunset finished off the day. The next day was a drive north, out of the park (18-24) on the way to MacDonald Observatory (25-40). The Hobby•Eberly telescope's main optic is a massive honeycomb array of large mirrors (30-33), nearly 10 meters in diameter. An extremely generous staff member there actually rotated the massive telescope on its alt-az mount for us to better view the main mirror array, best seen in photo 32.
Please note that GPS coordinates only locate the approximate areas where the photos were taken and may not be accurate. My detailed GPS tracklogs were lost due to a software glitch.
