We spent most of day 6 at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona (photos 5-32), photographing all the telescope buildings there. The McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope, the strange slanted building shown in photos 5-11 and 14-16, is the largest solar instrument in the world. There is a mirror that tracks the sun (who's assembly is seen undergoing some maintenance in photo 15), which reflects light through the sloped building and well underground into an instrument room, parts of which are seen in photos 12-13. A view inside, looking up and out out of the "light tube" is photo 9. Check out the ancient looking control panel in 13... this was 2010 after all! Photo 22 is an IR view of your's truly, taken inside the visitor's centre, seen in photo 20 and 21. Photos 33-38 were taken at Chiricahua National Monument the next morning and the remainder were taken that evening at the amazing City of Rocks State Park in New Mexico, where we camped.
Please note that GPS coordinates only locate the approximate areas where the photos were taken and may not be accurate. My detailed GPS tracklogs were lost due to a software glitch.
