The first part of this gallery has shots taken at Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument (1-25) and on the walk back to the car, I decided to use my IR-converted EOS-20D and not shoot any colour (28-41). That evening, we camped nearby and saw lots of birds and many vultures as well (42-47).
The next day, we drove to White Sands National Monument and spent a few hours hiking around in the evening, the remainder of the images in the gallery. White Sands are a huge dune field comprised of very white gypsum grains, often times looking like snow in the bright midday sun with shadows reflecting the blue of the sky. The tones shift when the sun gets lower and the light warms in colour. It is exceedingly rare for large dunes of gypsum sand to form since gypsum is water soluble! That area of New Mexico is quite dry and since White Sands are east of a small mountain range as well, there may be a rain-shadow effect, further reducing the local rainfall. In addition, there is no place for what little rainwater there is to drain from the Tularosa Basin, where White Sands is located, so evaporation recrystalizes the gypsum and wind erosion eventually replenishes the sands.
Please note that GPS coordinates only locate the approximate areas where the photos were taken and may not be accurate. My detailed GPS tracklogs were lost due to a software glitch.
