The next two days were very relaxing. A drive around the island and then a walk along one section of the dike that surrounds most of Föhr, helping to prevent storm tides from flooding the shallow land. Apparently the local farmers alternate in letting their sheep graze on the dikes which handily helps keep the grass trimmed! There are three shots of my cousin's beautiful dog, Elsa, and some photos of my cousin's goats, some geese and a horse come at the end of this gallery.
The pocket watches belonged to my grandfather, my mother's father. He was a watchmaker and I believe some of these were ones that he had repaired but then the original owners never bothered to pick them up again. The photos turned out far better than I thought they would, given that I simply put a piece of purple fabric on a small stool by a large window and shot them all handheld, using the soft illumination of the overcast day as my only light-source. These now belong to my aunt on Föhr and I was very happy to have had an opportunity to see and photograph them.
The two photos of the cover and inside of a greeting card are from one that my mother had made herself in 1972, a Mother's Day card for her mother. The watercolour roses on the cover were surely inspired by my father's rose growing hobby and since my mother had been a calligrapher at one point in her life, she also did a wonderful job of the lettering on the inside. It was also a great treat to be able to see and photograph this card!
